This section is going to give you the overview of how a modern above ground pool should be plumbed and why:
The purpose of the above chart is to show that an 18,000 gallon pool (27 ft. Round) can be filtered with a 19" sand filter. Longer pump operating times are often preferred to collect leaves and floating debris in the skimmer before it has a chance to submerge to the pool floor.
I prefer to have a separate valve for:
I recommend this vacuum side pool cleaner .
The required flow is about 30 gpm.
I simply turnoff the skimmer and divert 100% of the pool suction to cleaner.
The cleaner runs for a couple of hours as needed.
The pool water continues to be filtered while the cleaner is running.
Spiral tubing is not considered to be "PIPE".
While widely used in the above ground pool industry, please note that it isn't classified pipe.
Spiral tubing normally comes in two sizes. 1-1/4" and 1-1/2". The larger size will have less hydraulic resistance.
There are more rigid types of flexible tubing or hose which are also identified as pipe.
This type of tubing/hose isn't rated at the same high pressure as PVC pipe but is normally suitable for pool "Operating Pressures".
Although it is often buried, most manufactures don't warranty it if buried. Underground termites/rodents/insects may damage it.
Widely used in the pool and irrigation industries.
Allows for larger and less hydraulically restricted piping.
1 -1/2" PVC pipe systems can flow 32 GPM at 6 ft./Sec.
2" PVC pipe systems can flow at 64 GPM at 6 ft./Sec.
May be buried or above ground. Some plumbing codes require exposed piping to be painted.
